Traditional Barn Design – New Sustainable Build

Although this looks like a barn conversion, it’s actually a completely new replacement building with a much higher degree of sustainability than you might expect in a barn dwelling.

Hibbs & Walsh closely followed the original footprint of the old Essex barn, matching the height to the original building it was replacing.

We chose solid concrete block-work for the walls, with a thick layer of external insulation, finished off with traditional black-painted feather edge timber boards. Asymmetric oak trusses were manufactured off-site.

External insulation is one of the most thermally efficient ways to ensure maximum heat retention and minimum heat loss. The roof is insulated above the rafters. The hot water and heating for the house is provided by a ground source heat pump.
